go to advance auto and by a 62" 6 ribbed belt for like 16 bucks. starting at the alternator, go to the power steering pump, the to the crank, then around the water pump anback to the alternator. if you want to take the a/c components off, you can but definately dont have to. that way, if you need it, you can just switch the belt back.

Yeah what timmy said. I did this on my old firebird because the A/C unit locked up, being winter didn't feel like putting a new AC compressor on at the time, ran it without it going to the compressor. Summer rolled around bought a new A/C compressor, next week the car got totalled. But yeah I noticed you live in Riverside, Cali. I figure it gets kinda hot there in middle of summer.

Will that same belt work for the 3.4?

610k6 I have this belt on my engine. It takes a hammer & flathead screwdriver to put this ***** on, but teh next size up was too loose.
              routing

belt was about $16, a lot less than the dead pulley from teh next post vvv

              for teh 3.4, THIS
              configuration i had used a 685k6

If you intend to remove the compressor you can replace it with a dead pulley from Intense for around $100 and keep the stock belt...the ac junk weighs around 28 pounds so it depends how much you think it is worth it.

GM sells a pulley for the 3.4 that can be used if you remove the AC compressor. It will bolt to the accessory bracket and allow you to use the stock belt routing and makes better contact with the tensioner pulley.

I didn't really have any serious issues but felt more comfortable with the idler pulley.
