  • New key?

well i lost my keyless remote and i never had a door key for the firebird. I bought the car with the ignition key and FOB... is there anyway to get a door key so i can get back into my car. I'm gonna have to get one eventually and i'm locked out now so ****. Advice would be appreciated. I called a dealership and they said they can't make a key with the vin or anything like that. They said a locksmith will have to get the car unlocked and take the lock to have a key made for it.

yea you would need someone to make one. You might have to buy a key FOB off of ebay or something and then program it to your car for the time being until you can get a door key made.

So what do you do when the battery goes dead in your car?

Call a locksmith. They can make the key for you right on site. I had it happen to a 1982 Firebird a long time ago.

Back in the early 90's I think it cost around $75. The guy came to my house, unlocked my car and made me two new door keys.

Ok, do me a favor and call another dealership. I know for a fact they can make keys via the vin. now that might just be for the ignition but hell, these days, its all one key.

well i have the ignition key so i will call another dealership tomorrow and ask them. When i told the dealership, they asked what car and year. I responded with firebird 98 and he quickly said "No, we can't do it on that year only 99 and up.

Does your key have the security chip thing in it? If not, maybe thats why they cant do it on pre-99. it doesnt make sense to me why not though since its a different key right?

i'm not a 100% sure how long they keep key blue prints for all cars, but from my knowledge they are able to make a key via vin number. other wise, that's pretty gay if they can't. im sure the dealership was just being stupid, and didnt want to bother with it. anyways, good luck.

the ignition key does... but i don't think the door key does. I never had the door key so I don't know.

And yeah, i think i was gettin the push around with the dealership.

                        Re: New key?

all ignition keys for 4th gen f-bodies should have the security chip in it. at least every 4th gen f-body ive seen has had one, from '94 and newer. as far as the door keys, they never had a security chip. it'd be pointless, and annoying... while making them too expensive for just unlocking a door, or popping a hatch... or locking the glovebox, wow they do more than we thought. maybe they do need a security chip, haha j/m. nah, im sure that dealership was just yanking your leg, they should be able to. i mean if they can look up your paint code via vin, or any other info, why not a simple key?

key fobs are extremely easy to program. the most time consuming part of it is holding down the lock/unlock buttons waiting for it to accept the code (like 20 seconds)

Well after forking over 40 bucks to have pop-a-lock make me look stupid by unlocking the car in a matter of 30 seconds I decided to drive to another dealership and they made me a key real quick. All in all... I have spent 70 bucks just to get my key and door unlocked.
