crap gas milage?

Hey guys,
Im new here and would like to say what a nice board you've got here. I recentely purchased a 1998 Chevy Camaro v6. Its a sharp car and only has 79,000 miles. I dont know if I got a good deal anymore since I paid 5,500 for it and it gets worse than poor gas milage.

I used to to own a 2005 Mazda3 speed. It got about 21 mpg compared to the 24 or 25 it advertised. I sold it for more than it was worth and bought a camaro. People have been saying the v6 gas milage is great so I opt'd out against a v8. (My dad said he got 18 mpg on his 2001 T/A).

Alright so anyways. I used my first full tank today and only got 257 miles out of it. (Half and half city/hwy) Its a 15.8 gallon tank? so Its a little bit over 16 mpg. Wow? Is it me or is that not TERRIBLE? Yes, It is an automatic :-\ so I would consider a few mpg's lower than what is advertised but man... 16mpg? my dad gets better than that and he has a v8.

full tune up mabey, fuel filter, tire pressure, check a few of those things.

fuel filter, plugs, wires, air filter, oil change, tranny service, and SEAFOAM the car. It'll free up all the built up carbon, resulting in better gas mileage, and more power!!!!

i think our tank is only 14 some gallons isn't it? reguardless that is ****ty MPG i say massive tune up...

I am getting only about 225 on a full tank....what am I doing wrong...?Is ther an easy way to find out?

wow, i get about 350 miles on a full tank when im easy on the gas, theres a chance your o2 sensor mite b shot, thats all i can think of that would result in that much of a change...

we completly disconected mine after putting a 3inch exaughst n and b4 i got it replaced, my car only got about 275 miles to a tank... hope this helps

For starters, make sure the following are proper as they can (individually or combined) affect gas milage.

front end alignment
tire pressures (at recommended or harder)
O2 sensors
Engine Temp at 210F
Driving habits
Oil viscosity and type (conventional or synthetic)

Search the posts and you will find many many more recommendations.

I bought the car from a good friend who had it since she bought it new. It was owned by a girl and never beat on. She had the oil changed every 3,000 miles. She took the car to the dealer and said "fix anything wrong with it" every time she had the oil changed. I will take it for a diagnostic or something later on today or tommorow to see whats up.

theres not a V6 around thats known for good city gas milage, the V6 engine is know for its highway milage because of the low rpms in overdrive, if you just watch how hard you punch it on take offs and keep that first gear in low rpms you will notice really great gas milage, and drive on the highway as much as you can....that and use cruise control...i fill up around 260miles when i drive in the city but on the high way its usually around 350 or more

My city milage in my 99 varies from 300 to 330 miles per tank. But that's not exclusively stop and go traffic. The route I take to work is a combination of stop and go with lots of streches at 50 MPH.

Is anyone elses fuel gauge way off? I can have a full tank, drive like 200 mi. and it is still above full.. once it gets down past full it seems like it drops really fast..

I never really checked my MPG because I always fill up when I am 3/4 "full", and just put $20 in.
