  • 2000 Firebird Headlight Motor Problem

    Members of Greatness,

Today, when I tried to put my headlights down after dropping my fiance off, the driver side light did not go down. It didn't move an inch, nor did it act like it wanted to move. The lights still illuminate, but the rotating shaft coming out of the driver side motor doesn't rotate at all. It had a full range of motion yesterday. I have already replaced the faulty plastic gears with the brass ones, and again, there is no motion of any kind from the driver side light. So, aside from never buying a car with pop up headlights again, does anyone have any advice on how to troubleshoot the problem and see what is wrong? Would it be reasonable that the headlight motor died at this age and mileage (80,000), or should I be suspecting wiring or something else? Thanks!

ok well i have had the same problem as you with my passenger side motor.

This is the deal, when my gear stripped out on my motor, i waited to late to replace it and i ended up stripping the inside of the motor so that the headlight can no longer line up properly. There is a stopping point and a starting point that a little lever hits to make the headlight go down and up, when the motor is stripped like mine(the gear housing wiggles around and is not soild) that stopping and starting point is alittle off making the whole system fail. It "overextends" somehow when the lights go up, so then it cannot go back down. Mabey ur having the same issue, the only way I can think of making it fully functional and never hearing a grinding noise or not see that damn headlight up EVER again is to just buy a new motor, i just found a guy thats parting my out one for $75. Thats a good deal. :o Good luck finding a new motor or fixing the one u have now.
