Could be a prob with the light sensor in the dash vent. I took mine out so that my lights are always on when I drive.

A bad motor would not come up at all

Light sensor? No I don't think firebirds have them. I had strange headlight issues, it turned out that the wiring harnesses were badly corroded. Check them out (behind the headlights, remove the plastic trim ring first). If you pull them apart and see junk inside that could be your problem. I cut mine out and spliced the wires together, everything was all better after that. That has been a year ago now, still just fine.
