8 months ago my 96 firebird would not start. i ended up realizing that the vats ignition wire was the problem so i bypassed using the resistor method. Started right up and didnt have a problem until 2 weeks ago when the car wouldnt start again. waited 2 or 3 minutes and started right up. it did this about 2 other times this week. the other thing is while i was driving this week the security light would stay on for a minute and then shut off and would keep doing this. Now i can not get the car started at all. Could the whole vats module be bad and can i bypass this or do i actually have to replace this. any help would be appreciated. thanks

Re: Security light on car wont start
I left the battery disconnected for about an hour. Car started right away with no security light. car now will not start even after disconecting the battery and now the security light stays on even though the car will not start. it is now stuck at my work parking lot.

Re: Security light on car wont start
its either your chip in the key or the ignition lock cylinder.
search " bypass VATS" or something and your find how to bypass it.
your car thinks your stealing it, the bypass is easy. if you cant find it i'll find it and post it up later.1998 bright red camaro ,M5 ,Y87 ,stock

Originally posted by Rune:
If it smells like a turd and looks like a turd, chances are its probably not a candy bar.

Re: Security light on car wont start
i have already done the resister mod about 8 months ago and that worked so i was assuming that the resistors are still good especially with the security light intermittantly on while driving for the last week and it didnt do that when i was having the problems that the resistors fixed

so you already by-passed the vats with resistors?1998 bright red camaro ,M5 ,Y87 ,stock

Originally posted by Rune:
If it smells like a turd and looks like a turd, chances are its probably not a candy bar.

Re: Security light on car wont start
Yes i did in July but i was thinking it was something different this time because of the light going off and on while driving right before this happened and now it wont start while the light stays on.

Re: Security light on car wont start
might be the lock cylinder, have you tryed using the spare key? have you cleaned both the key and the lock cylinder with electrical contact cleaner? are you sure you have the right ohms in the bypass?1998 bright red camaro ,M5 ,Y87 ,stock

Originally posted by Rune:
If it smells like a turd and looks like a turd, chances are its probably not a candy bar.

Re: Security light on car wont start
i let the car sit overnight with battery disconnected and when i hooked it up the security light before i even tried to start it was still on. i assmume it is not the ignition cylinder because i bypassed it with the resistor already. im very frustrated. if the resistor was bad, why would the light still be on with the battery disconected. wouldnt it click on after i tried to start it.

What i meant to say was as soon as i hook the battery back up to the car, the security light is on, even before i try to start the car. i checked the connection of the resistor and it seems to be fine.

Just to say something...I understand the fact that you wanted your car to work, so bypassing it would be fine, but for 8 months? Isn't about time to put it back the way it came from the factory and fix the problem that started the bypass? Just seems to me your bypass might be the reason for your doom. Just my 2 cents though.
