I did not do the FTRA mod because I was concerned about all the standing water we have around here with the frequents rains.
I did the nostrils cut-out and have not had any problems with water.I solemnly swear I am up to no good.

1,000 thanx for your opinions. I am not too concerned about water in the intake. I asked a buddy of mine who is a master machanic about the water issue, he said a "little" water won't hurt, (unless you drive through a lake) I'll probably go w/FTRA. Thanx again.

yup...no water for me either...something about the way the air channels are set up in the hood...the guy at suncoast creations explained it to me a long time ago 12 SECOND DUAL STAGE DRY NITROUS POWERED 98 A4 V6 CAMARO
www.MySickCamaro.50megs.com
Best ET: 12.82@103
Best MPH: 104.7
Best 60\': 1.75 - Stock TC

quote:
Originally posted by Shodown:
1DV6 runs 12\'s...enough said.

I personally dont think that functional nostrils provide anywhere near the same amount of air intake unless you are using a k&n fipk. Going with the ftra is a much better choice if you are using a lid. And like the others said, unless you drive through 12+ inches of water, than you have nothing to worry about.2000 Sebring Silver Z28 M6
Jet-hot lt\'s,!cats, Hooker aerochamber,slp cai,mti lid, slp ss hood-spoiler-cme,eibach springs,bmr control arms & relo. brackets,bmr adj. phb,slp sfc\'s & stb,b&m ripper,Z06 wheels, Nitto 555\'s, and much more

You can make/buy thick rubber gasket for the /home made-cut out nostrils. It helps to create a seel between the airbox and the back of the underhood 'bulkhead-hood latch' extension. One piece is mounted to the front of the airbox and the other is mounted to the inside of the hood latch bulkhead. the outer surfaces form interlocking 'wedge' so that you car open and close the hood and the two gaskets mate together. For this tight of fit you do need block of plates during heavy rain. (the plate only needs to cover the lower half of the nostrils...hard for rain to go up and over.
after researching all that...I went with the FTRAIK. Will probably be selling it in a few months after installing SC.
Lights mounted in the nostrils would be cool, though....hmmm.....

I think I'll probably make my own ram air box. I actually installed the FTRA on my '99 bird, along w/K&N filter, Whisper lid, & flowmaster exhaust. I traded that bird for the '02 I have now, cuz of a main bearing seal I didn't want to deal with. I kept, at least, the K&N filter, Whisper lid, but let go of the exhaust & ram air kit. So after seeing what the FTRA actually is, I can make one of those. It was either that or cut out functional nostrills. Thanx again, for everyones opinions, thoughts, & idea's.
