• I or Y pipe?

I have a A4 94 Camaro. I already have the 80 Series Flowmaster which sounds great. I'm going to put on a high flow cat, I also want to put on bigger pipes. Which should I get, Y or I pipes? I'm going to get them 3 inches. Do you have any idea how much it would cost?

You need the I pipe. Dynomax sells 3" pipes for around 100 bucks from summit. They come in two pieces. 45593 and 42273

just get the y-pipe matched to the collector diameter on your headers, then have the 2 sides connect to a 3" collector and go into a 3"cat and 3" I-pipe.

        Disregard that.

A Y-pipe and an I-pipe are two very different things. The Y-pipe is what runs from your exhaust manifolds to your catalytic converter, and the I-pipe is what runs between your cat and your muffler.

No point it getting a new Y-pipe if you don't have headers.

If you want a new I-pipe, you can order the 3" pieces shortdog listed, or buy a used 2.75" piece off of a V8 Camaro or Firebird. Dynomax is supposed to have a 2.5" mandrel bent piece, but availability seems to be in question at the moment.

While on the topic of Y pipes, Has anybody compared one on a 2000 to that of a 94 V6 camaro? Mine on my 94 was strait pipe except for the gashes where the lady that had it before me ran over stuff. Mine now is kinda crimped or something weird, looks like an intestine or something. Does this hurt the flow enough to worry?

I just replaced my S pipe so let me explain a little and hopefully yours is like mine but no garantees. The manifolds go into a Y pipe which is calls so because it takes two 2" pipes(Maybe bigger, I forget) and combines it to a 3" pipe. Then it goes into the cat and then out as a 2 1/4" pipe. FYI I'm stating inside diameters not outside ones. Then after the cat there is a S pipe, two 90* bends making a S form because there is about a 9 1/2" offset of were the pipe is and were it needs to be because of how the car is formed and where there is room to run the pipe. Then the I pipe, Intermidiate pipe runs from there back to the muffler.

I don't know about the LT1 Y pipe but I have all 3" pipe now and I love the top end, all except the noise. It gets really loud and annoying but sounds awsome at idle and up to 2,500rpm. That's now were I try to shift unless I need to get somewhere quick or I'm racing. Plenty of low end still, that's all I can use without being annoyingly loud.

quote:
also, whats this talk of an S pipe? i wanna upgrade to 2.75" diameter piping!

The "S-pipe" is what we call the S-shaped bend in the exhaust after the catalytic converter and just before going up over the axle. You're going to be hard-pressed to find 2.75" piping unless you pull the exhaust system off an old LT1 car. Otherwise, stick to either 2.5" or 3".
