• Nitrous and Insurance

Ok, so i finally found the kit i wanted, after all of my research im finally ready to do the n2o....but then the parents found out... yes thats right, i am not faced with two important questions that will ultimately decide if i get nitrous or not...

1.) Will it void the extended warranty that they paid about 1k for from GM...
- Yes, i already figured that one out... i think im going to try and cancel the warranty and get back whatever cash i can, so hopefully that isnt a big issue but currently that harder question is...

2.) will the insurance company void the policy if you get nitrous and tell them, or if you dont tell them and they find out when you get into an accident?

anyone have any ideas... i know most of you probably havent told your insurance compnay, and why would you? you dont have parents thats why. I have to do everything the legal way... of course nitrous is just like any other mod right? increases HP... does that mean i have to report my exhaust and intake and shiftkit and all that crap? i mean come on... but i guess nitrous is "different" so now what... i have to figure something out that my parents will accept...

anybody know the laws about nitrous or where i can find them out in california? i have heard things like "cant be within reach of the driver" and "cant be "hooked up"" whatever that means..

but say i didnt tell my insurance company, and they found out some how, would they be able to void the warranty because of it?? i woudlnt think so as long as you are following the law, i mean if its in the car and you get in an accident but its not hooked up then im pretty sure they cant do anything because it wasnt the cause... but if i smash into someone and the nitrous i hooked up, then they can say somthing? and can they void the warranty? any suggestions are welcomed... thanks

Well, check your local laws for possible permit requirement.

As for the parents....... tough call.

I just didn't tell them.

Insurance company will not keep ya if you inform them you are stuffing a compressed gas bottle in your car and possibly intend on street racing/ legal racing your car

Nope.

Insurance companies will NOT (well, 99% sure) keep you on a policy if you inform them of the nitrous oxide system.

They will probably not want to keep you on the policy PRIOR to the possibility of an accident

my parents are afraid that i might get into an accident, nitrous involved or not, and then when we need the insurance money to pay for damages, that they will say nope, your on your own because he has nitrous and didnt tell us....

please give me some hope!!!

i am trying to convince them that it is more the show of it that i want and that yes i have to admit that i might use it once in a while but it will be no more dangerous that me driving my moms v8 lexus for 10 seconds lol...

its more of a thing where my v6 looks fast and EVERYONE and im not kidding, thinks that its an 8 cylinder. so i need to give my little 6er some balls!! it needs the nitrous....I NEED THE NITROUS!!!!!

i bet that as long as its not hooked up, the police wont have a problem with it and if its not hooked up at the scene of an accident, it wont be an issue...
what do you think?

what if i rigged it up so that i spray through the filter... so that way i can disconnect it when im not planning on having some fun, and ill just have the unit "clamp on" to the plastic lip below the air filter. so that way i can remove it and i can tell the cops and the insurance company that i dont spray , its just for show! If you are really wanting to have no problems with police and insurance and if passing emissions is not something you need to worry about where live then you would be better off saving for a turbo or SC. this is one arena that without a doubt boost>juice.

How much do you drive your car?
Possibly check into "show" insurance.

This limits the mileage, but you can tell them you have nitrous installed for "show" purposes and that will be ok I believe, This also covers a lot of the aftermarket parts on the car as well as long as you give them a list.

Just an idea.
