so i was wondering, how hard is it to install a new head unit in our cars?
and whats a good head unit for some one who doesnt want to spend a lot of money and doesnt care to have anything flashy, just something that i can plug my ipod up to, witch is a big concern now that my favorite radio station is gone. (R.I.P. 99x)
It is not hard at all. Pull apart part of the dash remove a few screws radio slides out. Get wiring adapter for radio.. sometimes have to splice wires others are direct connect with wire adapter.
Alpine is always a good choice and a fav, eclipse are also good.
Trim around A/C controls and radio pops right off. Three? 10mm? bolts hold in the radio. Radio slides out but sometimes doesn't want to slide out all the way due to the short antenna wire. Just try to reach behind there and disconnect it. Disconnect harness.
Now. Two choices. Either buy a regular ol wiring harness from anywhere that sells car audio, and solder (or crimp, or twist, or tape, or whatever method people use these days) the wires color to color with the harness the headunit comes with. OR take your butt over to Circuit City and buy a pair of their speed harnesses. One end for the car and the other for the brand headunit you bought. (Must be a brand they carry. Pioneer, Sony, Eclipse, JVC, Jenson, etc) Those harness plug together so no work required. You will also need a dash kit and a General Motors antenna adapter. Then install. Boom. It's VERY easy. On this note, since you already have to buy all these install pieces, you mise well let Circuit City just install the radio for you. It's free with purchase of headunit and install accessories. If they say they're too busy to do it that same day, tell them shut the F--- up and just knock it out real quick. I could honestly have it done in under 10 minutes with the speed harnesses they sell.
I just installed a Pioneer DEH-P6900UB in mine this morning. Took all of 30 minutes to splice the harness together another 30 minutes tops to do the install. I friggin love it. I plug my iPod into and you control it through the interface on the head unit. No iPod? just plug in a USB drive with your music on that works just as well. It's gotta be one of the best investments I've made on the car.

Savage, I've already offered this to bobby_J .... but if he turns it down, I have an antenna adapter you can have if you pay the 50 cents to ship. If I had stamps lying around.... I wouldn't charge at all. But these would be coming right out of the machine, so I think it's only fair.:)

i think i will shop a little for one from best buy or circuit city and have them install it for me if its free, but on the other hand if i do it myself, ill learn something, and i don't have to worry about someone else in my car.
