  • Sail Panel Speakers

I read through the FAQ, and I did read the sound system thread over at Ls1tech, but I'm still fuzzy on a particular detail that I need confirmed for me. It seems as though the sail panel speakers and the rear speakers in the 98-02 Firebirds are being ambiguously discussed in that I'm getting a bit lost in determining what I'm really reading about.

Will someone please tell me exactly what the sail panel speakers are? One moment I'm thinking they are the speakers in the SIDE panels, and not the speakers in the hatch area... and then in the same breath they are referred to as rear speakers.

    Thanks!

the ones in the back seat are the sail panels. the ones in the hatch are the rear hatch speakers

Alrighty, thanks. I've been reading so much about it, it was beginning to lose and confuse me.

dont mean to hyjack the thread, but are the sail speakers (if non-monsoon) still focused on low's and bass are i have been reading about. every thread is mainly monsoon oriented.

The sail panel speakers are next to the rear seats. I frequently call these the rear speakers too. When referring to the far rear speakers, I say hatch speakers. My car didn't even have locations for these speakers. And hell, they're pointless anyway. Not even deserving of the name "rear." lol

In non-Monsoon vehicles, the sail panel speaker play full range music. Not just lows.

Hey Heady, no, it's alright. I noticed there's a not many Monsoon threads anyways that cover sound quality, although it does cover basic hardware stuff like the FAQ, but I think the answer is yes given that the hatch speakers in the Monsoon setup DO NOT contribute a noticeable amount of sound by themselves. The rear speakers make all the difference it seems for our cars.

I removed the rear speakers from my car yesterday evening and here's what it's like sound-wise:

            A: I don't have a rattle anymore :-)
B: I have not the ability to hear/feel the lows in a song. I used bass-driven songs like you would find with Coldplay (I didn't have any hip hop handy) or U2, and let's just say those songs were effectively neutered.

I read through more of the info at LS1tech.com and then checked Crutchfield of course, but does anyone have recommendations on a direct-replacement set of speakers for the Monsoon system? Crutchfield showed me Sony Xplods that are listed as direct replacement and seemed reasonably priced. My Firebird isn't my daily driver anymore by the way, so I don't have any cheap or expensive motivations here. I just know that I do not want stock speakers anymore as this is my 2nd pair of rears to blow out.

            Thanks!

              Re: Sail Panel Speakers

i dont know if i did or did not have a monsoon system in the car when i bought it (never had any desire to look) but i did find out the lows were the only ones coming out of the sail panel speakers and the mids and highs were coming out of the rear(hatch) which like96firebird says are useless, so eliminated the hatch and ran new connections from an external amp to the sail panel speakers and installed a set of 3 ways. Def the best way to go.
