  • ABS INOP ????

I was cruising around today and saw my "abs inop" light was on. Does anyone know why this comes on or what i can do to fix it. I was kinda gettin' on it a little before i noticed the light....just winding out the gears, shifting at about 4500 but i don't think that caused it or we would all have that light on all the time.
I put in a new set of spark plugs just before i went for a ride, i don't think i disturbed any of the wires going to the ABS and i went back after the light and made sure everything was connected properly. I also reset the PCM by removing the fuse for a few min, but that didn't help either.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks
    -chris

I've seen that light come on when the alternator is getting ready to die and the charge on the battery is getting low. Check to see if you alternator is charging correctly. Get your battery tested too. If you still have the original battery it maybe time for a new one.

Take it to a mechanic and have them check the ABS sensors and pull the codes. That'll tell you if one of your sensors needs to be replaced.

I have had that light og off on me maybe 10 times, and everytime was due to low charging problems whether it was my battery, alternator, or corrdoing alternator wire. Check your battery wires and alternator wire, make sure all connectins are clean and watch how your car is charging. I think this is more likely then the sensor going out.

If oyu were winding out the gears the ingiotn was pulling alot of power from the system and the alternator may not have been able to keep up. When i had both underdrive pulleys on and my old alternator was going out at WOT the ammeter would be in red but at idle it would be fine.

And if it is oyur alternator wire jsut buy a big fat battery cable replacement for $5 at a car store and use to to replace the alternator wire, I tried snipping cleaning and putting on new connectors and it would keep corroding on me oso i just replaced the wire and not one corrosion problem. and yes I used the electrical connector grease to prevent corrosion and I still got it.

        Hope this helped.

This is going to sound really crazy...and i thought the same thing when i made the same post you did about 2 months ago...apparently the geniuses up at GM had a little engineering glitch in the electrical system of the camaro when they designed it. Whenever any rear tailight goes out, the abs inop light will either blink or come on steadily or intermittently. ( 9 times out of ten if you check (especially the third light in the wing) when your abs inop light comes on you have a taillight out. Now it's possible that there's another cause, but if you haven't had any abs problems recently or ever, i'd check your tailights. Many other camaro owners have had this exact same problem

            thanks for the advice guys.
i'm going to check all my connections again and also check the tail light bulbs.
hey 'MississippiMaro' you said this happens on camaros when a bulb is bad, is the firebird wiring the same.
            probably is but just wondering.

Yes, the exact thing happened to my bird.

Edit: Make sure you check the Third brake light (on the spoiler). That is usually the culprit.

My ABS INOP light came on once when I was cresting a very slippery snow covered and icy hill. I was moving pretty good until the last 50 yards or so where I was spinning the tires and just creeping up the hill (only moving maybe 2 - 3 mph) and when I was right at the top the light came on. Luckily I made it down the other side without sliding. I shut the car off and turned it back on and the light was out and hasn't come on since.

                BTW I don't have ASR
