MP3 Player Stolen out of my Desk

As most of you know, I'm a high school teacher. We have rules against using cell phones and ipods(mp3's) in class just like every other school. If a student is using either in my class, I usually give a warning and tell them to put it away. If they wear an MP3 player a couple of times, I take it away. I even have a sign in the front of the room that says "No Mp3's or Cell phones in Class- Will be Confiscated".

Well, I took an MP3 player away from a "repeat offender" yesterday while he was listening to tunes in class. I told the kid he could get it after school. But he didn't show up to get it. So today he asked for it back during class. When I looked for it in my drawer, it was GONE. I asked him if he took it and he said NO. So I told him "well, it's gone". He was a little upset. I told him I'm sorry but someone must have gone into the drawer to take it. I felt bad for the kid. But he DID break the rules.... more than once.

Last year this happened in another class and the parents tried to go after the teacher to get them to pay for the stolen MP3 player. I guess parents don't bother reading the code of conduct rules that are mailed home to them in the beginning of the year. Now I get to wait and see if the kid's parents call looking for a new ipod. It's so much fun trying to enforce the rules! :rolleyes: Ughhhh...

That sucks :tdown: Dont you have locking drawers on the desks? or maybe a filing cabinet with a lock that you can use for this type of thing from now on...

I see where your coming from with enforcing the rules and all, but I would be Really pissed off if that was my iPod that was taken away for the rest of the day then stolen from you while in your possession

if it's well-known that you just toss the iPod or whatever in your drawer, and don't think about it again until whevner you next see the student...then I'm not surprised more haven't been stolen

well, i would believe u should be responsible for it. yes he should of left it home, but he doesnt deserve to be out of a player. If i parked my car in a redzone, should it be impounded and kept ?

well honestly I'd be more worried about kids going into my desk than the ipod itself, he broke the rules and now his ipod is gone. If I went to my parents saying my ipod (not that we had them then) was taken from me then stolen from the teacher my folks would be asking me why I brought it to school in the first place. They would then tell me that I don't have to worry about getting in trouble for bringing it to school anymore because someone else has it and I won't be getting another.

I guess times have changed in the last 10 years. Then maybe 10 kids might have a cellphone in the entire school. Now 10yr olds have em.


Ehh it all depends on the kids parents, either way it's not your problem, the kid should take responsibility for breaking the rules.

Well, let's say somebody's car gets impounded, and then it gets stolen from the yard. The impound yard didn't steal the car. The theif is responsible for stealing the car. The car wouldn't have been in the situation if the owner hadn't caused it to be impounded. Sure, the impound yard should have done more to protect it, but they aren't responsible for the actions of somebody else. If a theif wants something bad enough, a lock isn't going to stop them anyways.

Word will get around in the school in a few weeks, somebody will see the Ipod.

seriously... this world is going to hell and we're too busy worrying how to protect the people in the wrong, to give a sh*t and fix society. What ever happened to parents teaching kids respect and morals, rather than blaming everyone else for their own mistakes?

The kid broke the rules. He knew the rules and broke them before. He should be lucky to even get it back after a day. I'd feel a little bad about it myself, but you did nothing wrong.

sorry...if that were me I'd me mad p*ssed...and you WOULD be paying for it...on that note...I understand where your coming from with the discipline thing...but, it was in your possession at the time of the theft...dont take it next time, kick em outta class instead...Man when I was in highschool and the teachers tried to take something...non of the kids gave up there stuff...you woulda had to pry it outta cold dead hands

And this is where I believe a couple of you kids are WRONG. If you break the rules their could be other consequenses. Rules are created for a REASON. First off, it is a distraction to have an IPOD on your head during class. Second, these kids and their parents signed a contract agreeing to FOLLOW the rules and NOT bring these items into the classroom And third, I cannot control what happens after hours in my room. Someone may have gone through my desk at night. So No, I will NOT pay for the god damn IPOD that shouldn't have been worn in my classroom in the first place when students know the rules. I have a SIGN that says it will be confiscated. What happens after that, is not my problem. Sorry to be harsh. But it's pure bull**** to protect kids that are breaking the rules in the first place. Did YOUR parents ever teach you anything when you were young? Or were you allowed to do whatever you damn well pleased and get away with it? If that happened to me, mine would have said "tough sh!t. We're not buying you another one!" Like I said, I felt bad. But I'm not responsible for anything that is stolen. The thief is! (Hopefully we'll find out who).
This student was a ... READ: "Repeat offender" who was given a few chances. So maybe someone (or God) was trying to teach him a lesson. Btw, I took another one away today. I Sent it to the office instead... the kid had to chase it down. I'm sure I'll see it on his head again tomorrow. Since the rules don't apply to him either.

I'm sorry, but those of you siding with the kid are complete idiots who think people should be able to break rules or the law whenever you feel like it. There's a place for people like that... it's called JAIL. :wavey:

You could not have put that any better. I agree F'em should have not brought it to begin with. But knowing this generation mommy and daddy will buy them another. It was unheard of to bring a cell phone, pager or music device (cassete walkman or Cd player at that time) to school when I was going. Now it seems like parents encourage their kids to do so, or rather they really dont give a flip. I guess in the future we can expect a society with even more over packed jails because of a simple lack of discipline from parents of today.

The teachers and parents signed a contract, I'm guessing that by signing they agreed to allow their personal property to be confiscated? Does it say anything about you not liable for the confiscated property if it is damaged, lost, stolen, etc? If not, it might be a good idea to add that to the contract, regardless of outcome...

If the kid hadn't broken the clearly stated rules then it would not have happened.
