  • LS1 swap NEW wiring question

Ok, I did a search but didnt find anything and heres my question.

If I put a 98 ls1 in my 97. which I have done: Can I use a complete wiring harness from the 98 - as in change the body harness from the car to a 98 , and then get the 98 gauges- and not have any problems?

People do the Vats fix, but I think I can even get the key and ignition made to match the motor for nothing.

Im looking at doing this cause I cant do the rewire + I dont really want to encounter any problems. =) like dash thats off and bad fuel gauge. However right now I am going with the Corvette fuel rail and keeping my tank. I could swap the fuel - and I still have the 97 Brakes do I have to cahnge to the 98 ABS? Thx guys =0

=) Ive been checking your site- great site, but I get kinda confused when it comes to fuel - I have the vette setup but can I change the whole body harness over. I know its probly just as hard as wiring- but its a differnt kind of hard =) things ive been finding out are like I need to change airbag sensors so they work. Im looking for things like that.

I think rewiring the PCM harness is much easier than swapping out your entire body harnesses and such.

Like, I dont know why but looking at your diagrams and figuring out the wiring is just confusing to me. I would consider myself electrically inclined, but I just dont have good diagrams. U did 99 - 97, but 98 is differnt. I figure, all the time ive spent trying to learn about the wiring and by the time I wire it , I coulda just swaped the harnesses and fired it up. how long did it take you to wire it. + it looks like u had your wires out of the car. I on the other hand have everything installed.

98 is very similar to 97.

Took a few hours to wire it up. Would take a LONG time to rewire the entire car.

If you're going to do an engine swap, you'd better know something about wiring.

No way I would swap out my body harnesses just for an engine swap.

As I said, I could probly wire it -if I had complete diagrams to work with - but I dont. and I get confused looking at your diags. =)

Spend more time looking at my diags and your wiring harness ends...

                    it is everythign you need.

not that its major but Dont I have to do something different for my fuel level sensor - as I have a 98 motor and PCM And non electrical. is there a way to chagne the steering shaft while everything is in the car easily. The motor and tranny are in my car but the steering linkage wasnt connected when we put in the motor, I am down to working by myself and I was having a hard time trying to get it linked up

I used a 99+ plastic tank with my 97 gauge cluster and fabbed up my old fuel level sender from my old tank to work with my old gauge cluster..

fueling is a PITA for engine swaps.

98 needs fuel level from PCM and correct sensor in tank I believe.

Did either of you use the LS1 body control module and air bag module and all the in dash wiring? Or did you keep your original dash harness and do custom wiring? Wiring is looking like it's going to be a PITA. I'm changing my entire dash to 99+ just so I can fit the new gauge cluster. I don't think any of my 94 wiring can be used in this swap.

sure it can.. just rewire the PCM harness to match up to your body.

94 harness isn't much different from my 97.

I can't believe you guys go through the trouble of rewirign your entire car.. why not just buy a new car then. Totally not worth the effort to rewire everything.

Just fix the PCM harness to match up to your car and be done with it.

I was under the impression that I would run into a lot of small problems trying to mate the wiring. Having the gauge cluster light up when the headlights are turned on...or having the radio stay on when the key is removed. (couple examples) I thought the BCM did all that.

I think rewiring everything would be just as much trouble as trying to customize the wiring together from the different years,,if not faster/easier.
