i was thinking about getting a mild street cam from abbot racing im pretty sure it cost around $300 but what im trying to figure out is if u have to pull the motor in our cars to do it (97 3.8L) i got a quote from a shop and he said it would be $968 if i provide the cam and lifters he also said that is was a 15 hour job becuase you have to pull the motor and i was wondering if that was accurate or not?

    Re: Cam install

I'm sure someone will chime in and say for sure or not but I would guess that you do have to pulle the motor. 15 hrs sounds like hes milking it but I don't really know.

Edit: After reading the heads and cam bible sticky, there is no mention of pulling motor, so no, you do not have to pull motor.

The haynes manual states that it's a job that can be done with the motor in you just have to remove the radiator, fans, shoruds, etc.

        Re: Cam install

it can be a 15-hour job, but you def. don't have to pull the motor...just take the upper and lower intakes off, take off the valvecovers, all the stuff on the front of the engine (serp. belt, waterpump, front cover, etc, etc), then pull the cam out. Hell, there's even a way to do a cam swap without even pulling the intakes off, but since you'll have to upgrade the valvetrain anyway, it's best to just tear the motor down from the top going bottom.

So, to answer your question, yes and no. Yes, it's a 15-hour job (esp. if you have to change the valvesprings) but no, you don't have to pull the motor. Sounds like to me that the mechanic was trying to save face and didn't want you to think that it would take him so long to do something that didn't involve pulling the motor

Then keep your grubby hands off the keyboard. If the OP wanted to know what the Haynes manual would say, he'd go down to a Barnes and Noble and read what it would say, not go onto a forum and ask it's members what the book says. Speaking of reading, you really should pay attention to your $10/year sig. quote.

I've had enough of your off-topic crying. If you don't have anything to say about cam swaps, there's a lil red x in the top-right corner of your window that has your name written all over it

I think any mod and person on here would refute that comment. Otherwise threads wouldn't get locked for people saying what can I do to make my car faster. People don't read they assume as you did. There's plenty of people that come on here and ask what the manuals say instead of going down to a store and seeing for themselves.

Yes I know what my sig says but I'm having a ****ty day at work and I'm tired of inbread a holes such as yourself constantly thinking you know all and your way is the only way. It's not worth my time or yours to argue about something as trival and immature as this, he got his answers.

I still stand by my comments that the gene pool is tainted and it should be cleaned!

whoa dude, calm down... i think he was just stating when he did his cam he didn't pull the fan. like wow, i thin if anybody is misunderstanding anything, it's you...

anyways, never done a cam swap myself, but from all the reading i've done on it. no, you don't have to pull the motor. i suppose pulling the fan and radiator would only help you keep from damaging them in the process, but other than that i dont see why you would have to pull them. anyways, good luck on the cam...
