Pull the lid off the air filter while the car is running and I'll almost guarantee that the noise will get louder. It sounds exactly like the diagnosis I did on another 3.8. My friend said her bird sounded like there was gravel in the oil pan or something.... pulled the air filter lid off while the car was still running and the sound got louder and was very noticeably coming from the intake. My guess is the turbulence generated by the intake system.

Don't get me wrong, there are lots of other places rattles can come from but this would seem to me to be a commonly overlooked area. I'm throwing it out not to say that this will definitely fix your problem but this noise isn't uncommon to me either.

Let's hear your expert opinion on why the intake generates noise. Since you obviously know enough to laugh at it I'd like to hear your intelligent thoughts on the matter.
