did you have the car tested? regardless of price I would think it would be cheaper than throwing money into it to find if its a problem or not.

and second, we all know your pissed, **** happens, but when someone is trying to help, say something like thanks, but here is whats going on.. instead of actling like a mature 12 yr old... and I say mature because kids think they know everything and have to make others feel like **** when they are tring to help....

if you read my post to blizzard in a calm and unassuming manner you will realize i was not being immature. Don't give words a voice you cannot hear.

and if you mean tested, the bat and alt were tested and were working perfectly when at idle without accessories on.

was talking about actually taking the car to a credited Diagnostic center to have them check your car from bumper to bumper to find any shorts, or problems in your system causing the problems. Batt and alt are typical problems.. there can always be more.

it also doesnt cost THAT MUCH to take it to a dealer and tell them your problems. Half the time they will tell you what it COULD be, and what they can do to check it. Most of my questions I go to the dealer and talk to someone at the parts/ workshop counter and they tell me what I can do to check it. Other than that, instead of being pissed off all the time, Do the job right and take it in to get checked out...

how bout i make a promise. if the stock crankshaft doesnt fix the prob i'll go ahead and get it inspected.

i'll have no choice anyhow cuz this is my last option.

oooo i got some juicy info from the high output alternator guy, he says you can't run a high output alternator with underdrive pullies.... hmmmm we may have struck gold.

the underdrive crank pulley is whats causing your alternator and water pump to work less good.

also when i said earlier that my car stays at or below 180 i was mistaken.

i believe the middle hash is 210 correct? in that case it stays around 190-200.

it does shoot up at a stop but typically not past 210.

i agree about the crankshaft pulley and will be putting the stocker back on soon.

i'm surprised however that the many ppl who have the underdrive pullies like me have not complained before...

not too many people here have high mileage 3.4s with underdrive pullies.

most people here dont have 3.4s period.

Sometimes I have to wonder about the intelligence of the average shop mechanic. Basically they're saying they don't understand concept of gearing and how changing gear sizes affects performance. You can explain it to them this way. The stock pulley is larger than the underdrive pulley so the belt travels farther with each turn of the crankshaft using the stock pulley. Since speed is distance divided by time (mph = miles/hours) and the belt is traveling farther in the same amount of time it has to be going faster which means the alternator is turning faster.

If they still don't get it then try explaining it this way. Two pulleys the same size connected by a belt rotate at the same speed. If you make one larger than the other then the smaller one rotates faster than the larger on. The larger the big pulley gets the faster the small pulley spins for each rotation of the large pulley.

And if they still don't get it then tell them it's your money and you want the stock pulley put on so just shut up and do it.

WOW, you pretty much just pwned the mechanic.

btw andy did tell me all of this before and i believd him and was gonna put on the stocker but the mechanic told me all that bull**** of how it wasn't gonna help and then said he would call me back later to talk about it and next thing you know he was like "your car is done, come pick it up"

and yes i will just tell him it's my money so do whatever the **** i want

btw guys just to show u i'm not completley incompetent, i found the alternator rpm to engine rpm should be about 3:1 for a daily driver. so i found the equation for alternator rpm which is crank pulley circumference/alternator pulley circumference and found that with my underdrive pulley on the equation amounts to about 2:1

however, the stock crank pulley puts it at about 2.7:1 ... much closer to what it should be.

it is especially important to have this correct ratio when installing a high output alternator or it will not work correctly, this is in fact why the high output alternator, while working correctly was actually giving me LESS volts at low rpms than my remanned one.

                      Max out.

The Conclusion of this 17 page thread is:
High output altenator + Underdrive pulley = bad

waiting for my new oil dipstick tube to get in so i can have that installed with the old stock crank pulley.

if we are correct, it should fix the problem.

don't worry i will let u guys know what happens as soon as i do, should be only a few more days.

OK, so for a final update, i kind of fixed the problem.

i kept on the stock alternator and even the underdrive crank pulley. I bought an overdrive alternator pulley and tossed that on, it's a 1.75" pulley and it brought my pulley ratio up to 2.8 : 1, which is what it was before with an all stock system.

i can now have my headlights, sound system, AND radiator fan on at the same time and not have the needle move any lower than 13 volts or so.

if you want to look at it in another sense, it means i get to keep the 2 horsepower from my underdrive pulley and still have charging capabilitites.

the only bad side to all of this is the fact that i still think it's underdriving my water pump, my alternator might wear out a bit faster over time, and with the combination of my a/c delete pulley, overdrive alt pulley, and underdrive crank pulley, getting the belt sizeright is kind of a PITA lol, in fact it's such a rare size that it costs 30$ even for the cheap brand.

                                tko out.
