Here is an update on the situation. I had the car looked at and worked on privately after hunting down reviews of local places. The mechanic working on it happened to own a TA and Camaro and knew exactly what the problem was right away. It turns out it was not a heat shield. The exhaust pipe just before the muffler was pressed down against a piece of steel running from one side of the axle to another. Can't remember what it was called. Anyways, he said he had the same problem and rigged a piece of rubber so that it would no longer make a racket. Finally it worked. As he was showing me this, I told him where I had the exhaust put on and he told me that the person that installed it did a horrible job. The wire feed was left sticking out of the welds in many places, it looked like the welding was 'bubbled', and there were several holes in the welds as if they hadn't completed the job.
To top it off he said they hid the fact that a bolt was missing from one of my hangers, which also was causing the noise. Told me to go back and have them fix the mess they made of my exhaust. He snapped off a piece of wire to show them. I also found out my pinion seal is leaking as well as the power steering. From what I've read its fairly common with f bodies and my best bet is to keep an eye on fluid levels first. Which is good because the price I was given to repair both was a little over 450 bucks. Not sure if thats fair or not but it sounds like a lot of money to me.
On a scale of one to ten, how difficult are these repairs for the novice? I've done several searches and have some idea of it.01 V6 Firebird, Flowmaster catback, Navmate gps, B&M Ripper.
