Re: My gas mileage has gone down the drain..suggestions?

The tail gate creates wind drag. There was a whole episode on mythbusters on the tailgate myth. The way the tail gate creates wind drag is by the wind draging above the truck as well as the air under the truck. When they meet up at the tail gate it creates a vortex and it holds the truck back just a little but it can alter your mpg just by a few miles.

This would be created with the tail gate up or down?

So what you're saying is I need to close my tail gate to get my Camaro back up to my old mileage? Sweet! I would have never thought of that!

Alright, I'd still like to use this thread when I get another calculation for mileage, so let's please get back on topic before this is locked or deleted. Thanks :)

What grade gas you running? I was getting about 19-20 mpg in my camaro on regular, have flowmaster cat back and thats it, tested out premium and have been getting an average of 24.5mpg, and thats still having fun with the car since I don't like granny shifting too much.

My cars got 125k on the engine too since its been said that older engines get worse mileage, and they do I'm just saying what mileage mine has on it. I make mostly short trips too since Albany/Corvallis is kinda small, 5-10 miles is usually all I drive per trip, occasional HW but not much.

The acetone myth was already covered in this thread.

I've been running regular since I bought the car. Every once in a while I'll fill the tank with plus or premium but I never noticed any difference. I took a nice 100 mile trip today so I'll fill up tomorrow and see what my calculation gets me.

Hopefully you get good mileage. I haven't been getting as good of mileage as I have before either. I used to get 20 in the city and 30 on the highway and with about half and half driving I would get 25. Now it seems like I get 18 in the city and 28 on the highway, because I get about 23 on average now. Which isn't bad but not what it was. The best I ever got was 35 on a all highway trip when I first bought the car, then I proceeded to start changing things...lol

Well, I filled up today, and I'm getting great mileage now! Right?

No. 21.3 mpg, 79.6% highway. What am I missing?

Did you ever replace your coils?

I didn't, but I was under the impression coils are fine unless there is a noticeable misfire or problem of some sort. The car hasn't misfired even in the first few seconds of cold start up for at least 3 months and in all other aspects runs just fine. Should I still replace the coils?

Not really if you don't have a miss. Have you checked to see if you have a caliper or E brake hanging up?

I can coast for long periods and the car doesn't seem to slow down any quicker than any other car I've driven. After short trips around town, I've touched my discs at all four corners and none seem hotter than any other.. pretty warm but that's just from normal braking. The car pulls slightly to the right on the highway; maybe a foot or two in 400-500 ft, but I get free alignments so I'll get it aligned anyway. tire psi is between 31 and 32 at all four corners.
