    Re: 4-banger turbo?

Is this really happening? On a forum where we say we love our Camaros because they are Camaros and it doesn't matter if it has a v6 or v8, people are dissing the idea of a Turbo I4??? Its still a Camaro! Its still gonna look cool, and quite honestly that 260hp 4 banger would kill at least 50% of the v6's on this board and get 28-32mpg to boot. I see no problem with a 260hp base option(maybe with AWD), and the 3.6l and whatever V8 they go with as performance options. More options means a broader sales market.

One other way to look at this... What if GM announced that they were going to release an E85 only engine in a Camaro? Would we shun that because Camaros are supposed to run on gasoline and have always been that way so it should continue like that 'til the end of time? I'd say not. Times are a changin' people, we just need to get use to it.

Although I can't see a I4 in a camaro, you have a point it is still a camaro and will forever be with whatever they decide to put in it.

As for the E85 only, I've heard that even though the engines are there it is better to run gas in the FFV Engines because E85 corrodes the engine still like it did back when they first started toyin with it back in the ....... 80's(?)

yea, it wreaked havoc on the rings and such, and the spark plugs had to be changed like oil, but the ones now dont really pose those problems...

and you guys talk like an I4 would destroy the heart of the Camaro...let's not forget ppl, we're talking base model here! The V8 models will still be around, drumming up business for the rubber refineries...

hell ill take the I4.... its going to be one of the domestic tuner cars same with Rhys Millen's solstice... as long as its a RWD I have no objection....

Horsepower is how fast you hit the Minivan... Torque is how far you take the Minivan with you... :wavey:

With this I agree, the day that a Camaro is FWD is the day that hell will freeze over. I don't even see the point of FWD cars anymore with the technology in AWD, which i could live with in a Camaro. I'm not being hypocritical here, I just plane hate driving FWD cars.

But why even bother with a 4 banger turbo thats like putting a honda engine in the camaro.
...I don't know if anyone caught this, or picked up on it.

If I remember correctly...they stopped putting 4 cylinders in the 3rd gens in '85 I thought it ran '83-85.
So if it was an '88...it wasn't stock?
Eh at least in America. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong.

there was a 4 cylinder in 86, but there's a star beside it...don't know what that means. Either way, there were no 4-cylinders in 88. I guess it wasn't stock.

Well even if it wasn't stock a 4 banger in a Camaro was not strong back in the 80's.Let's just wait and see to see what Gm will do.

Well I think they may be aiming at taking a bite out of the ricer market as well. That groups loves turbo's no matter what they are in look at the dodge neon as an example. Offer a great looking car add the turbo whoosh and offer a lower price and your going to sell allot of cars to allot of kids and young adults just getting into the market. As far as the V-6 I have a CTS and I swear there is realy 2 more cylinders hiding somewhere on that car because it sure as hell doesnt feel like a 6 but I get 24mpg out of it so who knows. Its one of the main reasons I opted to rebuild my 6 banger F-bird, cuz having a fast V6 is cool, key is its gotta be fast though lol.

if a 3800 II with 200 hp and 225 lb/ft of torque can propel a car wieghing 3,500 lbs quite well, I don't see why a 260 hp and 260 lb/ft of torque turbo I4 (as the one used in the Sky redline) can't do it...the 5th gen shouldn't weigh much more, if at all than a 4th gen.

the 5th is expected to wiegh about 3800lbs in v6 trim. unless the turbo is going to get instant spool its not going anywhere in a hurry.

your comparing apples to oranges. the 3800 makes most of its power down low. 4bangers need time to build power.

                              down low? 200hp @ 5200/ 225tq @ 4000, wouldnt call that low :)

but yeah the 4banger turbo wont happen.

its like putting a v6 into a lambo

Well lets see what Gm will do to the Camaro. If they really want to offer a turbo charged camaro how come they don't offer a V6 package with the 3800 series II turbo charged like they did for the Grand National, but the Grand National is a 3800 series I. It would not take Gm a long time to figure out how to make a 3800 series II turbo charged Engine.
